What is the questions format and types in Kingston and sutton grammar schools?

Answer

Stage 1: Maths - Around 50 Questions, English - Around 100 questions- Multiple choices - Kingston

Selective Eligibility test (1st exam)- Around 50 questions for Maths and English - Multiple choices - Sutton

* Maths:

These tests are straightforward and use a mix of calculations based on shorter questions and longer worded questions or questions from the Key Stage 2 curriculum.  But the calculation level must be very solid and required to do quickly. The difference between the good and the excellent in this test tends to be marked by an ability to work both quickly and accurately.

* English:

English papers set by GL contain a number of different sections. These include comprehension, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The comprehension is not normally a difficult classic text but children may find unfamiliar vocabulary within it. The comprehension will be about 1000-1500 words long and children will then have answer 20-30 questions. These are classic comprehension questions that ask the children factual questions where the answer is in the text and inference questions where children will need to apply logic. The Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation elements do not go beyond KS2 and any child doing well at primary school and predicted a high level 5 should be able to cope well

Stage 2: Maths and English - Written-test

 The Maths paper will include a mix of calculation based questions and worded maths problems together with some two or three-step problems that require children to find missing information before they can work out the answer. In English, the paper may include comprehension and writing questions.

What is the pass mark for the 11+ exam?

Answer

Most parents ask this question because they want some guidance on how their child might be doing at home. But there is no specific pass mark for the 11 Plus for Kingston and Sutton.  Being a competitive test the schools will take the top pupils who apply (subject to their own admissions criteria). We do know that the schools do not require pupils to reach a minimum level in all disciplines as happens in some other areas.

 Most parents wonder if the marks being achieved at home are anywhere near the standard required. With decades of experience we’d suggest that children scoring at least 90% from the GL practice papers at home are beginning to get into the right zone.

Typically children will perform much worse on the day due to nerves or lack of stamina but their scores at home will be an indication of their ability.
